Today’s the Day!
Today’s the Day!
Awoken early on this auspicious morning – when all I can do is yawn,
Beaten to the alarm by neighbourly nonsense – which felt like shortly after dawn!
With the countdown of the ticking clock – provisions and supplies gathered as one,
The long hand takes its time in the flowing of constant – forever governed by the sun!
With wheels set in motion – strummed heart strings of emotion – the sharing of a smile,
Echoing memories in familiar twists and turns – while going the extra mile!
Stepping onto the verge – where adventures merge – the hedges with their seasonal trim,
Soaking up the scenery – the freshly watered greenery – catching showers on a whim!
Kicking through the early autumn leaves – fallen well ahead of their time,
Gathering in clusters – discarded by the drought hit trees – sadly past their prime!
To the door warped and twisted – from its earth baked footings – longing for the rain,
Making an entrance with wrestling moves – with a puzzle to trick the brain!
Through the utilities – sheltered in shadows – we make for the old school gate,
Recent in ritual for the Yonderland view – entering the arena to congregate!
With a view from the corner – watching a Buzzard – skirting the hedgerow down the road,
Following its features – drawing near from the distance – with a welcome overload!
A Dragonfly zips by – catching the eye – like a helicopter looking for somewhere to land,
Drip by drop the drips start dropping – and I feel it on the back of my hand!
Precipitation commences in fine vertical lines – a random downpour from a clearing sky,
Taking up shelter under the overhang – a hedgerow helping to keep us dry!
And so – with its passing we take second breakfast – a tradition we have come to depend,
Fuelling the forces – that could drive our wild horses – sharing the news with a friend!
With the drawing of sketches – we are given understanding – with the absence of a plan,
Forgotten in the excitement – an ironic indictment – save for the character of the man!
With string-lines – tapes and compass readings – the Labyrinth finds its heart,
On a natural North and South alignment – today is the day we make a start!
Practice on paper befits better judgement – and the memory leads to the square,
A precursor to construction – points of precision – the layout of pathways soon to be there!
Cue the performance of the resident artist – joining the dots and creating the lanes,
Poetry in motion – like the waves upon the ocean – pumping the blood through the veins!
A proliferation of Dragonflies – a multitude of colours and sizes – soaking in the scene,
Discovering the Labyrinth quadrant in random patterns – sharing a moment with the serene!
Doves and Pigeons circulate – with groups of distant Crows – touring around the trees,
It’s quiet without the fledgling Buzzard’s screeching – in the nest that no-one ever sees!
With a continuous line completed at the first time of asking – the Labyrinth takes shape and form,
A fine work of art – a long-awaited part – a place to dance and keep the spirit warm!
After lunch we take a wander and wonder at the Crab Apples – intermingling with young sloes,
Our most recent hedgerow maturing with the sun-wheels and the seasons – and on the story goes!
A Birch Tree looking all the worse for no wetness – let us see what comes with Spring,
The fruit trees hanging heavy despite the lack of rain – it’s a many splendored thing!
Through the door steps a visitor – an invited guest – making her journey down the entrance way,
There are captured flickers of colour in glimpses – like a network of windows – with light at play!
Behold a gathering – introduction made in casual passing – as we show off the deeds of the day,
With a sense of pride – its tried and tested by those invested – each in turn to have their say!
Reminiscence unfolded with many layers – sharing in the rhythm of unlimited words,
Enjoying the connection and admiring the vistas – while listening for the sound of the birds!
A young Buzzard precarious – landing on a shaking side branch – learning to stretch its wings,
A fully fledged yearling and out for discovery – out for adventure and all that it brings!
In its delicate throws – a light shower comes and goes – and once again we are joined by the sun,
Fluffs of white cloud – avoiding the crowd – drifting the breezes and on the seasonal run!
A Red Kite calmly glides on a natural quest – above the neighbouring trees and beyond,
A Buzzard takes the star roll – going out on patrol – before taking the time to abscond!
Readying our leaving we confirm the placement of the fence line – a task yet to complete,
A tour breaks out and I retire to my previous viewpoint – settling in my favourite seat!
Still the Dragonflies weave – like you wouldn’t believe – making the most of their day,
Some of them amble – some of them scramble – while it’s time we were on our way!
