Spring Watch!
Spring Watch!
Out of the cold and sprinkled with gold – welcome the exploring of spring,
Each and every morning – nature softly yawning – behold such a beautiful thing!
The awakening passed – with a mission so vast – the cycle of life in full flow,
Fertility seeding – the start of the breeding – with the birds and the bees on the go!
With the climb of the sun – each and every one – the flora and fauna catch the light,
With the moulting of fur and feathers – the shooting heathers – timely rituals keep out of sight!
The seasons they bring – another generation to sing – building the hope of burrow and nest,
In a mass of leaves – the trees roll down their sleeves – with an invitation to nature’s quest!
The shadows of shade – hide the generational parade – keeping their cool from the sun,
A succession of birth – as we warm with the earth – riding the wheel of fortune is how it’s done!
From the mountain tops – along the contour drops – down to the edge of the shore,
The mists rise and fall – the hills and valleys and all – through the ages as ever before!
The tides they wave – with beaches and cliffs to engrave – ripples of time and raging spray,
Tall stand the stacks – taking up ledges that form with the cracks – private is the island hideaway!
Puffins test their mettle – where once the Rabbits came to settle – forming a home in the crust,
The dippers and diving – busy their lives in contriving – with the next generation a must!
Sea Horses bob – as they get on with the job – a spot of roll reversal around the coast,
Entwining tails – amongst underwater slugs and Snails – with the conditions they like the most!
With those swimmers all – there are those who creep and crawl – and those who slither and leap,
With all you could wish – from mammals to fish – the cycle of life sharing the shallows and deep!
The Raptors they fly – surveying the world from on high – soaring and hunting with grace,
Capturing their prize – with their numbers on the rise – firmly encouraged to take up their place!
The songbirds in their multitude – each seek out their solitude – each in their own inimitable way,
Maybe drawn to the Oak – or wearing secrecy’s cloak – secreted high and low and tucked away!
From the mountain springs – drinks the life of all things – upon its journey unto the sea,
With captured rains – caught in puddle chains – creating rivers – pools and ponds for free!
There is marsh and bog – that keeps history’s log – creating habitat where memories fade,
Visiting for spring – come long distance friends on the wing – a journey their ancestors made!
Fox cubs frolic and wrestle – or lazily they nestle – finding sanctuary behind the garden wall,
Sheltered in the green – away from man and the machine – answering the voice of nature’s call!
The Brown Hares come and go – little leverets lying low – hidden in the fields and the weeds,
Pheasants and Partridge roam – making themselves at home – keeping an eye out for seeds!
Nature’s stories and tales – leave their paths and trails – existence on the edge of a knife,
Interlocking cycles turn – as we live and learn – co-dependence in harmony with living and life!
Hidden from view – from the likes of me and you – quietly going about the seasonal flow,
Spare a thought – for all the battles fought – of all the creatures we rarely get to know!
